Causes for pipeline settlement range from misplaced or incorrect pipeline installation elevations to soil erosion from below the pipeline and weak or insufficient load bearing stratus. When raising is desired, Compaction Grouting techniques have a proven record of raising settled pipelines. Compaction Grouting is the injection of a low mobility, stiff cement grout into the ground beneath a pipeline in order to densify or compact the supporting soil and fill voids. Densifying soil increases its bearing capacity and its ability to support the pipeline.
How the Process Works...
Steel injection pipes are inserted several feet below the underside of the pipe to be raised. Pipes are wither drilled or driven into place and then retracted a few inches to open the end of the injection pipe and allow a low volume, high pressure pump to inject the stiff grout. As the grout bulb increases in size, the soil above the bulb and the pipeline are heaved upwards. Forces created by the expanding grout bulb are indirect, uniform, and low. The grout bulb inhibits direct pressures on the pipeline itself because the soils above, below, and alongside the pipeline are also heaved in unison. Eliminating direct forces inhibits disfiguration or cracking on the pipeline.
