What Is Permeation Grouting?

Permeation grouting is a technique that involves the injection of high viscosity grouts such as sodium silicates, microfine cements, and (polyurethane) foams into pores of granular soils without displacing or changing the soil structure. The primary purposes are to inhibit water migration and to solidify soils for structure support to inhibit soil movement during excavation.

How Does It Work?

Soil borings and a sieve analysis are performed to determine feasibility, soil types, material selection, and material volumes required to perform the work. Grout fluid is injected at low pressure to replace water or fill the pores between the grain particles. The grout bonds the granular particles together to create a mass of solidified soil, resulting in reduced permeability, increased soil strength, and stability.

Where To Use It?
  • In granular soils where underground utilities or site conditions inhibit other methods of support.
  • When support of utilities or structures is required prior to excavating.
  • As a Water Cut-Off wall around below grade structures or earthen dams.
  • Excavation support
  • Strengthening soils prior to increasing their load bearing capacities
  • Erosion control
  • In advance of pipe jacking
Advantages

Dependent upon construction needs, chemically grouted soils strengths can be adjusted for excavating mechanically or by hand. Grouted soil strengths can range from fifty to thousands of P.S.I. (pounds per square inch) and can be modified for short term or permanent applications.

The process can be performed

  • with minimal disruption, and project duration
  • for soil stabilization without slab removal
  • for excavation support
  • without vibration
  • little noise
  • without odors
  • does not require clients to vacate the structure during installation.

Permeation grouting can be performed days or months in advance of construction and can eliminate the need for shoring, underpinning or de-watering.

Chemical grouts used in soil grouting procedures are environmentally benign.
