Glossary of Terms

  • Grout - In soil and rock grouting, a material injected into a soil or rock formation to change the physical characteristics of the formation. Grout is also defined as any material which can be made to flow.
     
  • Slump - A measure of consistency of freshly mixed concrete or grout. Low Slump = non-flowable mix. High Slump = highly flowable mix
     
  • Slurry Grout - A mixture of water and any finely divided insoluble material such as bentonite clay or portland cement and water.
     
  • Offset - A recess formed in a wall by a reduction in its thickness or movement, off-center or at an angle.
     
  • Compressive Strengths - The maximum compressive stress which a material is capable of sustaining.
     
  • Shear Strengths - The maximum shear stress which a material or soil is capable of sustaining. (Shear-A deformation in which parallel planes slide relative to each other so as to remain parallel.)
     
  • Tensile Strengths - The resistance of a material to rupture when subject to tension; the maximum tensile stress which the material can sustain.
     
  • P.S.I. - An abbreviation for pounds per square inch.
     
  • Benign - Doing little or no harm; not malignant.
