Clay field tiles were installed by farmers to remove excess water that accumulated in low areas of their fields. Many date to the late 1880’s and remain in use until the 1980’s. When excavators breach the lines, buried tile grouting is performed to seal the tiles.

The locations of the tiles are often in county records if not, they can to be located using electronic equipment. Often four to eight-inch tiles are under pressure and carry large volumes of water. For this reason it is necessary to begin grouting deep within the tiles so leakage from open joints does not back flow into the excavation.

Anti-washout admixtures inhibit grout separation and increase pumpablility while shrinkage compensators insure the voids are completely filled.

Sealing clay tiles for abandonment should be carefully investigated to evaluate adverse affects that may arise elsewhere.
